Maui consists of more than 727 square miles of rugged beauty, containing terrain that ranges from rocky mountaintops to sandy seashores. While on a Maui vacation, here are some local sights you shouldn’t miss.
Iao Valley
The Iao Valley in central Maui contains a dense rainforest, and has been designated as a National Natural Landmark. One of the most popular spots to visit is the Iao Needle, a rock pinnacle covered in green foliage. It is located inside Iao Valley State Park, where you can enjoy hiking, photography and picnicking as well.
Location: End of ‘Iao Valley Road (Highway 32), ‘Iao Valley.

Entrance Fee: Parking fee: $5.00 per car. No fee for Hawaii residents.
Haleakala National Park
Make a visit to Haleakala National Park to see the world’s tallest standalone mountain. Mount Haleakala is actually a dormant volcano that provides a stunning place to watch the sunrise. The visitor’s center is located on the summit of this volcano, and contains a number of historical exhibits as well. Guided hikes are available through some of the park’s more than 29,000 acres, and this is also an excellent place to go horseback riding or biking.

Big Beach State Park
Also known as Makena Beach, the golden sands are situated against a backdrop of lush trees that provide privacy for beachgoers and shade for picnickers. The emerald green waters here are ideal for swimming and snorkeling in. This beach is also somewhat less crowded than other nearby beaches, making it an excellent destination for families. You’ll also be able to see Molokini, a volcanic crater that is mostly submerged under the ocean floor, and contains a crescent-shaped top that has become a local landmark. This crater contains more than 18 acres of land, and has been designated a marine life and bird conservation area.
Location: South of Wailea at the end of Wailea Alanui Road.
