Your Maui vacation will be more enjoyable with just a few strategies and preparations. The island of Maui has many remote locations that offer beautiful sites and recreational activities.
Regardless of your traveling style or budget, traveling through Maui requires a rental car. Since Maui attracts a wide diversity of tourists, there are cars to suit all tastes and budgets. Regardless of which rental company you choose, consider spending a few extra dollars on a trunk so your belongings are out of sight.
Maui has an incredible State Park system so if you enjoy camping you will be pleasantly surprised. Camping is safe in Maui’s public and private parks especially if done in pairs or groups.
Haleakala National Park has a variety of phenomenal options for visitors. However, it is important to note that the Summit Region and the coastal Kīpahulu region are very remote with the nearest towns 45 minutes away. The Summit is a unique part of the island though the 10,000 foot elevation is not hospitable for all visitors, especially those with respiratory issues. It is important to prepare for drastic weather changes and extremes. The temperature on most of Maui never drops below 80 degrees though the Summit Region of Haleakala can drop as low as 34 degrees.
Pack plenty of waterproof sunscreen. Reapply sunscreen often, especially in the water. Despite the popular images of bikinis on tropical beaches, it is best to wear white shorts and a t-shirt over your full bathing suit.
