Did you know that one of the wonderful, annual, May events taking place within driving distance of our Maui condos is the East Maui Taro Festival? Designed to celebrate our beloved taro crops, it’s slated to take place in Hana on the 3rd. To get there, simply jump onto the famed Road to Hana and look for Hauoli Road.
When you arrive at the festival grounds in Hana, you’ll get to enjoy poi pounding demonstrations, taro farm tours, shopping, live music, Hawaiian foods and so much more. The festivities typically take place from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. So you may want to head out to the festival grounds in the morning and spend the entire day.
If you tire of eating taro, you may want to sneak away towards the middle of the afternoon and squeeze in a trip to the Ka’eleku Caverns. They are located roughly 10 to 15 minutes away from the show ground on Ulaino Road. It’s actually a lava show cave that is open daily, year-round, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
We’d suggest allowing about 40 minutes to tour the cave on your own and at least an additional 20 minutes to walk through the onsite botanical garden maze. It’s constructed out of red ti plants, which are considered to be harbingers of good fortune. If you are lucky, you may be able to pick up one at an area shop or vendor booth. It would undoubtedly look fabulous sitting on the table in your Maui condo.
Speaking of which, if you head back to our Maui condos early enough, you may have time to enjoy a moonlit walk on Ka’anapli Beach or some taro chips and tropical drinks on the lanai before bed.
